Managing and developing your business
The keys to running a successful business are to have products that people want to buy, taking care of your customers, managing your cash flow and making a healthy profit. It all seems very simple really, but as many of us know - it's not. Customers are fickle, they don't pay on time and businesses are often forced to cut their profit margins. Indeed many businesses are lucky if they make a profit at all. Welcome to the real world.
How can we accountants help? Businesses, particularly small businesses are being swamped with paperwork and regulations and it is relentless. The more time you, as a businessman, spend doing your paperwork, the less time you are spending looking after your customers. The paperwork won't generate business but your customers will. This is why more and more businesses are outsourcing their accounting and administration work.
Businesses also need to be able to plan ahead. Key questions may be - What is the cash flow going to look like in three months time? What effect will cutting our stock levels have? Can I afford to employ somebody and how should I measure his/her performance? How can we improve our profit margins? These are the types of questions that we accountants are routinely asked. By being involved with our clients we can advise and assist our clients to make considered decisions. Business people can then get back to the role of running their business, visiting their customers and generating more business.
