Starting a new business?
If there is one thing you need when starting a business - it's a plan. If you don't have plan you don't have business. Many people starting a business find it difficult to put their ideas into formal plan. It is vitally important that you discipline yourself to do this in order that you can assess whether the concepts you are considering could conceivably lead to a profitable business.
You will also need bags of enthusiasm. If you are not enthusiastic about your project then you really cannot expect anybody else to be jumping for joy.
Research your market - You must establish who is going to buy from you and why. It's amazing how many people try to start a business without asking this question. Do you need to distinguish your business from others in your market and if so how do you plan to do this.
You must also have sufficient funds to get the business up and running profitably. To establish whether you are likely to have sufficient funds, you need to prepare a budget. If you need funding then consider the options available.
To be a successful business you need to take care of four things:
- Customers - You need to develop positive relationships with your customers, particularly those who you consider will become regulars. It is after all much easier to sell more products to existing customers than to constantly be looking for new ones.
- Cash flow - To many businesses cash flow is king. You will need to keep a close reign on your debtors and manage your payments. This will have a positive impact on your cash flow and the ability to expand your business.
- Controlling costs - It is always easy to justify spending money. Expenditure budgets are essential so you need to stick to them ensuring that all costs are either unavoidable or contribute to profit.
- Profit or the bottom line - This is a reflection of all your hard work. Generating healthy sales, controlling costs and your cash flow all contribute to this.
